We gave you a sneak peek of Caitlin and Dan’s snowy wedding last Friday…here is the second installment!  As the snow and the rain fell down throughout this Saturday in October, we knew we would have to use the backup tent!  So we jazzed it up with our hanging glass lanterns in jewel tones and set up the ceremony chairs along with fun lounge furniture.

We loved designing her beautiful bridal bouquet with purple calla lilies, dianthus, purple delphinium and red cymbidium orchids.

We are still so in love with their purple umbrella!  Stay tuned…on Friday we will show more details from the reception inside the Meridian House!

the key elements to this bohemian look were all chosen to evoke a earthy goddess vibe. the hair is down, wavy and most importantly, effortless. the fabulous head piece makes a statement however is not over the top, as to not compete with the flower child earrings. makeup for this look should be minimal with a rosy cheek. and the bohemian beaded bracelets finish this look off. The flower sandal adds a nice element of surprise and maintains the romantic vibe.

Just because you lean towards a preppy style, it doesn’t mean you have to be boring. to prove it, I paired a fabulous Kate Spade shoe with this look for your something blue. the strings of pearls for the necklace are classic but still a twist on the tried and true one strand of pearls. An elegant clutch adds some refinement to this look, Lanvin really knocked it out of the park with that little number, what a fun play on ribbons! put your hair in a low chignon, throw on your soft pink lip and march down that aisle.

for my glamour girls, the old Hollywood vintage style never ceases to wow. the ultimate over the top accessory is this incredible Judith Leiber clutch. i love mixing metals and it really works in this look. why choose silver or gold??? the olden days of choosing just one are over. the fabulous and romantic art deco earrings are from my favorite online jewelry store Charm and Chain. leave your neck bare to add some drama and instead opt for a delicate cuff. all that’s left are your dancing shoes and of course your secretly fancy red pout.

Was just looking through some older photos from brides over the years and came across some of my favorite wedding dress details.  Folks – don’t give up on buying vintage or worn-once gowns – look at what you can find!

Above left was from a bride where we did  the wedding in Anguilla.  Her Melissa Sweet dress is simply timeless and fun!

Above right is a gown from Amsale from a wedding we did at Woodend Sanctuary.  Just the beautiful hand-sewn detail of reused materials for the flower makes me happy!

Bottom left is a gown from Lazaro (which the bride met in person at Kleinfeld’s in New York) was just an absolutely stunning dress!  The details were magnificent at her beautiful wedding at the Ronald Reagan Building!

Finally, the bottom right gown is from Vera Wang at a wedding we did at the Decatur House.  Simple and lovely with flower and button detailing!

For our 3rd installment of Earth Day Week – I am focusing on eco-friendly photographers in the DC area.  It goes without saying that I highly recommend my brother and his wife from Documentary Associates.  Their weddings have been featured in the Washingtonian‘s Bride and Groom Magazine, The Knot, Essence.com for their work on the Green Wedding Consortium’s Earth Day Wedding Last Year at Decatur House, Eco-Beautiful Weddings, in the Eco Issue of Bride and Bloom Magazine,  Flower Magazine and more!  Their commitment to the environment includes being carbon neutral with Carbonfund, doing various non-profit organization photography, driving a hybrid, donating to various eco causes and more.  We work with them often and they are located right in the office with us in Bethesda!  (Yes that is a photo of me on my wedding day in the Dominican Republic!)

Another eco-friendly favorite photography firm of ours is The Observatory.  Owner Andrea Jacobson uses public transportation and Zipcar when she needs a car!  Growing up on the west coast, she grew up with reusing and recycling since she was a baby!  She took an enormous amount of photography for our first few issues of Eco-Beautiful Weddings – including our 1st issue’s cover shoot!  Their weddings have been featured in the Washingtonian Bride and Groom, Brides Magazine, The Knot and countless blogs.   You can see more about the above wedding photo at the Meridian House by clicking through to this link on United With Love.

One of the most talented photographers in the DC area is Nicole Wolf of Sota Dzine.  She is also really (what I call) a part-time missionary + full time photographer!  She has taken several trips (and will be going back) to Haiti to help build homes for those affected by the terrible earthquake last year.  Her heart is so big that she has raised over $15,000 to build homes on facebook alone (CLICK HERE TO DONATE)! I am helping her with a fundraiser for her Up From Under Project in November of this year (stay tuned).  I don’t know if I could even list where Sota Dzine has been featured here – it would make this post too long.  The photo from above is from a shoot we did together for Photo District News.  Her weddings and photography have been featured literally all over the world and locally in magazines like the Washingtonian, DC Magazine, The Knot along with international ad campaigns and commercial photography (they even photographed Lisa Loeb’s wedding)!  Their whole team is talented and they have big hearts!

Friend and fantastic photographerJennifer Hughes is sweet as she can be and talented beyond compare.  Heralded in both the greater Washington, DC and Baltimore areas – Jennifer is simply one of the best photographers around.  She has earned her reputation through fantastic wedding and commercial photography.  The above wedding photo (and wedding) was featured in the most recent issue of Baltimore Bride.  Click here to see more!  Jennifer also took the photos from our cover editorial from the Winter 2011 Issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings as well!

a little bit of whimsy photography is another fave of ours that photographed the cover editorial from our Spring 2010 issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings here locally.  She captures emotions so well at weddings and just has such an eye for detail.  She gives back to the community in so many ways and has recently become a vegetarian.

Balance Photography – One of the founders of the local green wedding showcase + Green America Member and so much more!  This husband and wife team also does some amazing boudoir work!

I have recently fallen in love with photographer Marta Locklear!  She recently did the amazing new cover editorial shoot for the Spring 2011 Issue of Eco-Beautfiul Weddings and she is a genius at using natural light.  She is an eco-gal!  She has her own vegetable garden and wants to start raising her own chickens too!!

Holland Photo Arts loves the environment and gives 5% of their total revenue to various organizations that help make the world a better place!  This husband and wife team is based on Charlottesville – so they are perfect for weddings in the Northern and Southern VA regions.

K Thompson Photography is another one of our favorite local green photographers.  She is a member of the Green Wedding Consortium and supports many eco-related organizations.

Kristi Odom won my heart as a bride that got married in Africa with very few guests and even took her own wedding photography!  She encourages people to see the world and experience new cultures.  She is also a member of the green wedding consortium and donates a portion of her proceeds to various organizations.  Her weddings have been featured in Eco-Beautiful Weddings, United With Love, Wedding Vow, Newnan Coweta, Wedding Event Style and more.

There are more photographers out there doing amazing things – just be sure to ask them when you meet with them.

Continuing our Earth Day week on how to keep your wedding eco-friendly – we move on to the next part of your planning process – THE CATERER!  Why is this so important?  You will spend approximately 50-60% of your wedding budget on food + rentals – so you want to make sure you are putting your dollars in the right place.  Our favorite and one of the best caterers in the United States is Design Cuisine.  Above are glassware from their sister company DC Rental.   Design Cuisine is now Green Restaurant Certified and prides itself on sustainable practices and using local resources as often as possible. Another nationally known caterer that claims DC as their own is Main Event Caterers.  In 2010, they were named Caterer of the Year by Catering Magazine!  They have their own in-house water filtration system with reusable glass bottles.  Their incredible chef prides himself on using locally sourced food as well.  They are 100% Wind-Powered and Carbon Neutral through Terrapass.  They have a comprehensive Recycling, Reusing and Composting Program and strive to educate their clients about how to stay green for their weddings. Occasions Catering was the first caterer in the country to become Green Restaurant Certified!  One of the first to compost and have been a supporter of local farmers years before it was thought to be “green”.  They even make their own jams and preserves in-house!  Truly one of the greenest caterers in town!

Gail’s Vegetarian Catering has been around for years as the DC area’s greenest vegetarian caterer.  Obviously going vegetarian for your wedding is the greenest option.  They are approved by Green America and create amazing menus with flair.  A note – their business is up for sale – the hope is that whoever purchases Gail’s will have the same philosophy and will continue with the same style.  Since it is has been on sale for a while – we are more than sure that Gail is looking for the best person to take it over!

Our final favorite pick for Green Catering is Catering by Windows, another local favorite that is Green Restaurant Certified.  Certainly one of the largest event caterers in the area – they even recycle kitchen oils and food by-products.

Priscilla of Boston’s Signature Style was put on display for their Fall 2011 Collection this past weekend in New York City.  So many of our brides last year wore Priscilla of Boston – I could not wait to post about this!

Along with their signature lace style comes this simple bodice with this lovely pink flower!  Gorgeous!

We saw bridal separates all over market this weekend.  This is a stunning way to reuse your bridal ensemble!  You could certainly wear that top out again after your wedding! While Robin loved the dresses, I also loved the cute decor they did without having a runway show.

Loving “Meredith” is easy to do! The layers of fabric coupled with that luscious fabric make for a fantastic silhouette that I love seeing year after year from Priscilla of Boston.  Perfection!

Again – another thing both Robin and I saw everywhere at market are short wedding gowns!  A trend that is not going away and I LOVE seeing!  This one is just stunning with the large floral details.  I can see a bride wearing this to a cocktail reception after work by adding a pretty colored sash or wrap and no one would know she wore it on her wedding day!!! PRICELESS!!!!

Again – a gorgeous separate from Priscilla of Boston with simple and lovely details. Totally can be worn again ladies!

I had a fabulous time speaking at the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico earlier this month.  One of the most important things that I learned coming out of the convention is that a lot of brides don’t think about the issue of care of their gowns after the wedding is over.  When you buy your gown, start thinking about what you will do with your dress after the wedding.  Preserving your dress and cleaning it is essential for the next generation to where it or for you to resell your dress on any number of websites.  Our favorites are:

Stay green and stylish and get that dress cleaned after the wedding and don’t TRASH the dress afterwards.  Ok – you can take some photos – but don’t set the dress on fire (which I have actually seen on a photographer’s blog), go knee deep in the mudd or submerge your dress in water if the fabric can’t handle it.  There are lots of ways to have a “Trash the Dress” photoshoot after the wedding without actually trashing the dress! If you have not been reading our Eco-Beautiful Weddings Blog – then maybe you have no idea that Anthroplogie’s answer for the bridal market is going live today and it’s called BHLDN (say “Beholden”)!  Above is my absolute fave of the dresses that I was able to catch a sneak peek of last week!  The Pinwheel tea dress and that amazing headpiece are to die for!  Not to mention the shoes that have vintage and scarce fabric on them!  Take a look at the blog post about this dress and the shoes here!

Robin Fisher and I were invited to tour all of the URBN family buildings at the Navy Yard in downtown Philly.  Their food court/gym space (to the right above) can also be rented out for weddings!!! Seriously a dream space for a wedding planner like me!  All of the buildings had some sort of eco element to it.  Whether it was the original Urban Outfitters sign as decor or reclaimed wood for flooring or steps, I was in love at first sight!!!

After touring their various facilities they brought us to their own bed and breakfast which was set up with 4 lovely coordinated rooms filled to the brim with their various special occasion dresses, upcoming decor items and bridal gowns.  They started off with the bridal fashion show with a candy bar and sushi!  It really was a wonderland and quite dreamy to say the least!

One of the dresses that we did not get to see on a model is this gorgeous gown with navy blue accents on it!  Just divine!  I really would love to see a bride pair it with these gorgeous yellow shoes!

The shoes, the candy, the accessories…everything was amazing.  Anthropologie’s BHLDN line will be the biggest line to hit the market in years and they will continue to grow!  Check out their website today as it will be the most coveted and most talked about wedding website on the block!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I am so excited to finally show you one of my favorite weddings from last year!  Margaret and Patrick were married this past October at Rust Manor (which is one of the Audubon Society’s properties).  This wedding meant so much to me as Margaret is the sister of a previous client Ameena (click here to see her wedding)!  I really got to know Margaret, Ameena and their mother during Ameena’s wedding and I was so excited to be planning Margaret’s wedding!

Her pretty bridal bouquet was comprised of purple vanda orchids, green cymbidium orchids and white ranunculus.  Margaret wanted purples and greens for the ceremony and blues and greens for the reception.

We were able to hang some pretty purple and white paper lanterns along with our green glass votives above the couple for a lantern chandelier effect from the sprawling tree!  We customized our reclaimed wood stage for them with a darkened natural stain.

After seeing our cute article on eco-friendly wedding children’s ideas in Eco-Beautiful Weddings (by Couture Parties), Margaret fell in love with the idea of a little sign for the ring bearer instead of a pillow.  Margaret’s mom also got a radio flyer painted blue to fit the color scheme for the little flower girl to ride in!  Just adorable!

During the cocktail hour the guests were treated to eye candy and so much more!  Since Patrick is Irish – they opted for a fun Shamrock Ginger Lime Mojito!  We kept the purple going with the flowers, but started to bring in the greens and the blues with this fantastic escort card table display:

If you have not heard of Rent the Runway – then you are missing out!  Don’t go out and buy that new dress that you will only wear once for Valentine’s Day!  Just rent a fantastic dress from Rent the Runway.  Couture designer dresses for a fraction of the cost!  Rent the dress for the night and send it back.  You can do the same for your bridesmaids! (Oh and by the way – this is super eco-friendly!)

Over the past few weeks I have met with so many fun brides that are looking for purples and lavenders for their wedding flowers!

So it got me thinking – I better do a blog post about this!  I created the above color palette as I met with one of my clients and we came up with a fun design scheme complete with flowers, furniture and colorful linens galore!  Purple has always been one of my favorite colors and can be used everywhere!  So here are my picks for purple for your wedding and your home!

Some of the best purple floral designs use hydrangea, roses, calla lilies and orchids.  But don’t forget fresh lavender, veronica, delphinium, stock, aliums, carnations, agapanthus, caspia, statice, anemones, hyacinth, muscari and so much more!  Check in with us to find out what is available for your wedding day!

This photo from Apartment Therapy is just delicious!  This should inspire you to use purple with matte gold items for your wedding day.  Go with matte gold chivari chairs and gold rimmed plates to get this regal look! Heck – get someone like Kendall’s Cakes or Cakes by Design to paint with edible gold on your cake or wrap pretty matte gold ribbons around the tiers of your cake.  (And no – I will not spray any of my flowers with gold – sorry folks!)

And this beautiful combination of purples, aquas and blues is enough to make me swoon!  I am starting to dream of an amazing lounge combination with purple and blue flowers with funky aqua bridesmaid dresses!  The splash of red gerbera daisies adds the extra touch of whimsy!

There is a sense of magic with royal weddings – especially when it comes to the British.

The world has fallen in love with the upcoming nuptials of Kate Middleton and Prince William because of the type of wedding they want to have. The bittersweetness of the ring is what has made us so star struck with the couple.  Instead of choosing a large diamond rock (which would have been easy for Prince William), he chose to give one of his prized possessions – his mother’s ring.

Their plans for a fair trade and organic cake (above organic cakes by Sarah Magid and Cakes by Design), the ring and asking that guests make donations in lieu of gifts are just a few of the ways that let us know that Kate and William are modernizing and greening their royal wedding.  We know she wants an eco-friendly gown and if she wants an organic cake – why not have organic and local flowers?

Kate is an elegant and modern woman and by watching their romance and engagement unfold, we think she will choose a gown that whispers a sense of simplicity along with grace and elegant flair.  Everyone has been speculating about different designers, but it seems she has been consulting with a couple of local designers in England – BRAVO Kate!  We know whatever dress she chooses will wow us and will be embedded in our memories for years to come!

Those that know me, know that it’s hard to find me in a dress!  Yes, I love to see all of my brides, mother of the brides and beautiful guests dress to the nines at the weddings and special events we do!  However, I am most comfortable in a pair of slacks, blouse and a beautiful necklace.  But, I am pretty sure that is changing after just one night in New York City!  Last week, the amazing Chris Kole met with me to design a dress just for me for our upcoming 1st year anniversary party of Eco-Beautiful Weddings Magazine! We will be showcasing the new Fireflies collection of Chris Kole’s The Cotton Bride at our Anniversary Party as well in December.  So, here is a sneak peek at my dress!

Yep – I am still following up on my time in New York City at Bridal Market.  Time is flying by as we wrap up the last few weddings of the year and gear up for our Anniversary Issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings!

But one of the designers that really stuck out for Robin and I was Amy Kuschel.

With Robin being from the San Francisco Bay area and a true Cali-for-ni-A girl, she was smitten with Amy Kuschel’s new collection (who is based in San Francisco).  I also just loved the wedding dress belts (top of post) that she creates.  They truly make her dresses unique as an added accoutrement!

I wanted to give you a quick look at the dresses from the side to see all of the different types of fabrics and styles she offers.  And….our Washington, DC ladies can check out her new Spring Collection at Hitched!  Keep in mind that Amy understands the economy we are in. She offers USA made lace versus French lace and her dresses are reasonably priced.  She has a variety of styles to fit almost any budget!
