We are so proud of our new issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings Magazine!  It is chock full of summery goodness!  Plus we have two featured weddings it from local photographers and vendors!  A must see issue!  Click on the cover above to check it out!

We have a beautiful summer farm wedding coming up this weekend – I can’t wait to showcase it for you.  We are not having a lemonade stand but more of a fruit infused water station.  But I love lemonade stations year round.  Even if you are not having a summer farm wedding…you can create the feel of one by having fun little details (like lemonade stands) that remind your guests of a day on the farm!

Why not have this adorable bathtub at your wedding?  We used it at the Eco-Beautiful Weddings Anniversary Party at the Decatur House in December to serve water in mason jars!  Available at DC Rental!

Our in-house antique bottles and mason jars always lend a farm feel,  Mary Kate even made these cute table number boxes for her centerpieces! Adorable!

Go with loose arrangements and fun and vibrant linens like this “In Style Fuchsia” from DC Rental!

Then, from one of my favorite outdoor weddings from last fall at Rust Manor – so fun sodas and straws!!!  So much fun!!

The Eco-Beautiful Weddings Magazine’s Spring 2011 Mini Mag is finally live!  Click on the cover above and check out all the Earth Day freebies available!

Today – we start the week of where you normally start your wedding planning process – THE VENUE!

Looking for an eco-friendly wedding venue can be difficult in the DC area or very easy – depending on what you are looking for. Since the majority of the beautiful mansions in the DC area are historic – you are typically paying to rent a facility that is also used for outreach programs to the local community or for the upkeep of the museum it may hold.  For example – Dumbarton House and Decatur House both are historical landmarks in Washington, DC and both have museums that they run.  Both are beautiful locations with different aspects. (Above is a photo at Dumbarton House taken by Documentary Associates).

We love doing weddings at the Ronald Reagan Building as the chef is dedicated to sourcing environmentally friendly and locally sourced food.  In fact, he took Blue Fin Tuna off the menu as he signed a petition to conserve this dwindling family of fish.

Another wonderful location for an eco-friendly wedding is the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis.  You can have your ceremony on their beach with the reception inside their LEED certified building.  Even comes with a tent for the outdoor patio for dancing!  Lots of wonderful locations to take photos and part of your proceeds go to help keep the bay clean!

The Arts Club of Washington is another one of our favorites!  (I got married there!)  A non-profit that also does catering in-house.  It supports the local arts community – an acutely dwindling breed of organizations that has stayed strong in James Monroe’s old residence!  This building is also a National Historic Property. The National Museum of Women in the Arts is a beautiful venue for your wedding.  A portion of the rental fee is tax-deductible.

The Corcoran Gallery of Art is another location that is on the National Registry of Historic Properties and houses one of the best art colleges in the DC area.

Constitution Hall’s Library and O’Byrne Gallery and Portico is a perfect Washington, DC setting. Run by the Daughters of American Revolution – their non-profit is service oriented and educational.  A non-profit along with being on the National Registry of Historic Properties.

The Warne Lounge at the Cosmos Club is one of the most unique and ornate rooms in all of Washington, DC.  It is about to undergo renovations, but if you are planning your wedding for 2012 and know a member at the club – call them immediately!  Totally one of the most unique and interesting venues and so few brides know about it.  Know anyone in the sciences?  They might know a member there!  We have a wedding there in May – stay tuned for those photos! (Also on the National Registry of Historic Properties).

Not into a fancy old building?  Why not something super new and LEED certified?  The Nationals Park offers a variety of fantastic and modern rooms to choose from to host your wedding.  Even if you are not a baseball fan – would you not love to have this fantastic bar at your wedding?  Their caterers use local resources and the view of the baseball field is not too shabby! Halycon House is another favorite among brides also found on the National Registry of Historical Properties.  Fair warning here that the property has been on the market for a while and none of us really know what will happen once the the building gets sold.

You’ve seen all the engagement shoots (like this one from Documentary Associates) around the Tidal Basin.  Why not have your actual ceremony there?  On the West Lawn of The Thomas Jefferson Memorial – you can have your wedding!  All you need is a permit.  You get a limited time frame to have it – so it can’t be anything super elaborate.  But where else would you ever have this opportunity to get married next to Thomas Jefferson??? It’s “free” as you pay taxes for it!

The Mayflower Hotel is one of the oldest and most ornate hotels in Washington DC. Also on the National Registry for Historic Properties, the venue is great for all of your out of town guests.  Even better still, you can do both your ceremony and reception in one building and your guests just have to go upstairs afterwards – no buses or shuttles needed!

The National Cathedral is one of the most ornate and glorious churches in Washington, DC  (also on the Registry)!  It’s incredible architecture mixed with its rich history really gives a great sense of grandeur.  (NOTE - The cathedral will perform weddings only when one of the following criteria is met: 1. The bride, groom, or immediate family has made, over a period of time, a noteworthy contribution as a donor or volunteer to the life and ministry of the cathedral; 2. The bride or groom is an alumnus of one of the cathedral schools (Beauvoir, National Cathedral School for Girls, or Saint Albans School for Boys) or is the child under 30 years of age of an alumnus; 3. The bride, groom, or immediate family member is a member of the staff of the cathedral for at least two years at the time of application.)

Josephine Butler Parks Center is possibly one of the most underrated wedding venues in DC Proper.  The Washington Parks and People runs the facility which is all about protecting parks, greening community projects in DC and community outreach in general.  A beautiful space at a reasonable rate.

Woodend Sanctuary has to be one of my favorite places to do weddings.  Nestled in Chevy Chase just of the beltway – it is the home of the Audubon Society and many educational and children’s camp opportunities for the community.  With an amazing grove and mansion with an attached tent – one of the best deals in the DC area as well. The Sewall-Belmont House is actually one of the 4 items in Congress’ “Save America’s Treasures” Program (along with the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Star Spangled Banner).  Again – underrated but a much loved property right on Capitol Hill has a wonderful yard with a tent out back.  This building was the headquarters for the National Woman’s Party where Alice Paul forged forth the woman’s suffrage movement.

This is by no means a definitive list of venues – but a great place to start for you.  There are tons of venues all over Virginia and in MD that I have not covered here (warranting another blog post in the future).

If you have not been reading our Eco-Beautiful Weddings Blog – then maybe you have no idea that Anthroplogie’s answer for the bridal market is going live today and it’s called BHLDN (say “Beholden”)!  Above is my absolute fave of the dresses that I was able to catch a sneak peek of last week!  The Pinwheel tea dress and that amazing headpiece are to die for!  Not to mention the shoes that have vintage and scarce fabric on them!  Take a look at the blog post about this dress and the shoes here!

Robin Fisher and I were invited to tour all of the URBN family buildings at the Navy Yard in downtown Philly.  Their food court/gym space (to the right above) can also be rented out for weddings!!! Seriously a dream space for a wedding planner like me!  All of the buildings had some sort of eco element to it.  Whether it was the original Urban Outfitters sign as decor or reclaimed wood for flooring or steps, I was in love at first sight!!!

After touring their various facilities they brought us to their own bed and breakfast which was set up with 4 lovely coordinated rooms filled to the brim with their various special occasion dresses, upcoming decor items and bridal gowns.  They started off with the bridal fashion show with a candy bar and sushi!  It really was a wonderland and quite dreamy to say the least!

One of the dresses that we did not get to see on a model is this gorgeous gown with navy blue accents on it!  Just divine!  I really would love to see a bride pair it with these gorgeous yellow shoes!

The shoes, the candy, the accessories…everything was amazing.  Anthropologie’s BHLDN line will be the biggest line to hit the market in years and they will continue to grow!  Check out their website today as it will be the most coveted and most talked about wedding website on the block!

There is a sense of magic with royal weddings – especially when it comes to the British.

The world has fallen in love with the upcoming nuptials of Kate Middleton and Prince William because of the type of wedding they want to have. The bittersweetness of the ring is what has made us so star struck with the couple.  Instead of choosing a large diamond rock (which would have been easy for Prince William), he chose to give one of his prized possessions – his mother’s ring.

Their plans for a fair trade and organic cake (above organic cakes by Sarah Magid and Cakes by Design), the ring and asking that guests make donations in lieu of gifts are just a few of the ways that let us know that Kate and William are modernizing and greening their royal wedding.  We know she wants an eco-friendly gown and if she wants an organic cake – why not have organic and local flowers?

Kate is an elegant and modern woman and by watching their romance and engagement unfold, we think she will choose a gown that whispers a sense of simplicity along with grace and elegant flair.  Everyone has been speculating about different designers, but it seems she has been consulting with a couple of local designers in England – BRAVO Kate!  We know whatever dress she chooses will wow us and will be embedded in our memories for years to come!

We are pretty excited here at Elegance & Simplicity!  A little over a year ago we launched the first and only online eco-friendly magazine in the world!  Now – we are able to have all 5 of our issues in print!  From this point on, our fans and vendors can now have the choice to just view the magazine online or buy a print version of the issue.  We know that there is nothing like holding a magazine in your hands!

We wanted to keep the print versions of the magazine eco-friendly while also not having to invest tons of money in printing and having hundreds and even thousands of unsold magazines being throw-away or recycled (which is the absolute norm in the magazine industry).  All magazines that are printed will be on demand – meaning that we will only print what our fans and vendors order.  We will never have more than 10 issues in stock and all of our printing and shipping will be carbon-offset.  Every single issue is printed on FSC certified recycled paper and they are just as beautiful as they are online!

We did not start considering printing our magazine until this past June when a number of brides and vendors starting begging us to print.  We really resisted at first.  However, with this route we are able to provide printed magazines to anyone that likes them and to keep it online to those that don’t!  Either way, we are keepin’ it green and spreading the word around the world on how to make weddings stylish and eco-friendly!

Currently we have a pre-sale going on now through 2/1!  After 2/1, all of the prices will go up!

Last night was such an amazing night for me…so I am going to get a little long-winded and sappy here – sorry!  I don’t do this often – I promise!

Yesterday I celebrated two anniversaries!  First and foremost I celebrated the anniversary of marrying the love of my life (Te Amo Carino Mio)!  Then, last night was also the one year anniversary of Eco-Beautiful Weddings and we celebrated it at the Decatur House in Eco-Style -more about that here!  Both anniversaries on the same day was a little stupid of me – I know.  I did not originally plan to have the 1st day of the magazine go live back on 12/15/2009 – it just sorta happened.  So 12/15 will always be a big day for me!

But the photo above is what I want to talk about.  I think over the years I have lost touch with the fact of how much my mom adores me.  You can’t tell here – but she had tears in her eyes.  She looked at me and could see how happy I was and, in her words, I looked beautiful.  For those that know me, I don’t wear dresses often, but when I do – I like to go all out. This dress was custom-designed for me by Chris Kole of The Cotton Bride and I felt beautiful in it.   When my mom first saw me in the room, she said a few “proud momma” things and all of a sudden I was swept away back to when I was a little girl.

I remembered this one day when she was brushing my long brown hair and looked at me in the mirror and said “You are just so beautiful”.  My mom is such a wonderful lady and everyone had fun chatting with her at the event.

This year has been so amazing with many beautiful and fun clients from Elegance & Simplicity and the growth of Eco-Beautiful Weddings.  I really owe a lot of my success to my mom.  She always taught me to work hard.  It was not necessarily with anything she said, it was what she did.  She worked so hard when I was a child, but always found time to spend with me.  She still works hard and still comes out to party on a Wednesday night!

I love doing wedding planning and floral designs and I have been totally diggin’ being an Editor-in-Chief this year!  So the point of this post is? My mom and I will both tell you we don’t photograph well and Delores from a little bit of whimsy photography really took my breath away when she sent me this image yesterday!  This photo will always mean a lot to me as it was such a special night and it started by celebrating with my biggest cheerleader – my mom!

Our Anniversary Issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings is live!  Click above to see the new issue!

As promised, I am back again with some flower faves!  This week I am focusing on things pretty in pink. Pink was a big favorite with our clients this year and I am seeing lots of pale blush pinks and magentas going into 2011 bookings.

Of course the summer and spring favorite is the beautiful peony!  I love using these frothy blooms for as many brides as possible between May and June as they are their most beautiful that time of year!  We coupled the peonies with vibernum with a mod white vase for this particular arrangement.

Two pink bouquets – one classic, one modern.  A classic rounded bouquet comprised of Dutch pink hydrangea, pink ranunculus with white freesia.  Then – I made the mod bridal bouquet on the right a few years ago – but continues to be a favorite among brides that come in looking for something a little different.  The pink mini calla lilies are mixed with black magic roses and pink nerine lilies.

This year was filled with fun soda and lemonade stations and we added some cute pink metal bins to our inventory for this pink soda station with all natural Izze soda!

The pink and blue combination was also a big combination this year.  We love using gerbera daisies for a fun (and not so serious) reception! Blueberries are a plus!!!

Of course – this would not be a post about all things pink without talking about the amazing pink headpieces that we featured in our first issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings.  Lo Boheme creates the most amazing headpieces from vintage materials and beautiful upcycled items.  We loved the pink pouf headpiece and The Cotton Bride dress so much – it graced the cover our 1st issue as well!

We love these two bouquets mainly due to the fun vintage ribbons we used.  Bouquet on the left was a fun bright pink rose, calla lilies, nerine lily and cymbidium orchid bouquet.  The bouquet on the right was part of our first floral design layout with Eco-Beautiful Weddings in our premiere issue as well.

I love ending with something sweet!  We have added new jars and glassware to our candy bar collection and pink never looked so sweet!

Those that know me, know that it’s hard to find me in a dress!  Yes, I love to see all of my brides, mother of the brides and beautiful guests dress to the nines at the weddings and special events we do!  However, I am most comfortable in a pair of slacks, blouse and a beautiful necklace.  But, I am pretty sure that is changing after just one night in New York City!  Last week, the amazing Chris Kole met with me to design a dress just for me for our upcoming 1st year anniversary party of Eco-Beautiful Weddings Magazine! We will be showcasing the new Fireflies collection of Chris Kole’s The Cotton Bride at our Anniversary Party as well in December.  So, here is a sneak peek at my dress!

I am on the lookout for shoes now!  So exciting!

The one designer that we did not cover on the Eco-Beautiful Weddings blog is Pixton Couture.  It was one of our last meetings before we left New York City and we really loved the new collection.  Although their dresses are not located in the DC market…I know many of you travel to get your dresses!  This is one designer worth traveling for.  Why? She designs all of her dresses right here on the East Coast in North Carolina and will customize as needed.  Her new collection has hues of peach and pink with a lot of sexy details! We had lots of fun with the details at Leah and Aidan’s wedding! (Like starting with these gorgeous blush pink shoes and her vintage yellow garter!)

Aidan’s lapel flower was created with white lisianthus with a fern curl accent.

They used our manzanita trees with hanging votives for half of the centerpieces while the others were our signature cupcake trees that guests placed their votives on!

They had an absolutely adorable guest book table!  Instead of an actual “guest book”, they had the guests write a note to the bride and groom for them to open later in life!

The beautiful and unique escort “card” chalkboard, a super eco-friendly wedding detail with no wasted paper!

Ahh – Michelle – once again – the signs are adorable!  Check out Meant To Be Calligraphy to see how she can create amazing calligraphic designs like this for you!

Main Event Caterers did an amazing job with the ice cream dessert bar with all the toppings!

There are so many more details – but you will have to wait for them for a much later post!  We have so much planned for the blog next week as Katie is off to New York City for Bridal Market to find the best of the best in bridal fashion for Eco-Beautiful Weddings!

We were so excited when Candace told me that she might want a hair piece for her wedding day.  We have worked with Lo Boheme in the past year and have just loved showcasing her items in Eco-Beautiful Weddings as well!

Lo Boheme customized this beautiful hair piece with a vintage charm and turquoise, yellow and white feathers.  It complimented the overall theme of Candace and Chris Ourisman’s wedding day perfectly!  Check out more photos from their wedding here and here!

We are super excited here to announce that our fall issue of Eco-Beautiful Weddings is now live!  Head over to see all the yumminess!

It’s live folks!  This issue was definitely a labor of love.  A lot of changes happened with this issue – although they may not be as apparent to the naked eye.  We really streamlined things and cut out some of the fluff and expanded some sections!

As you can see – the cover is amazing and so is everything inside!
